I. The Welcome
Word Is Bond™ refuses the deficit story that schools have written about Black boys for too long. Our boys are not behind. They are underserved by a system that has not yet handed them a text worth their mind.
This is where that changes. We work from the long Black tradition of literacy as freedom — Douglass reading by candlelight, Freedom Schools in Mississippi, mothers at kitchen tables across the country who have always known what their sons could become.
Word is bond.
II. The Framework
Literacy is not a skill set. It is an identity. For our boys, the identity work is the prerequisite — not the afterthought.

He cannot fully engage with a text he does not believe was written for someone like him. The first job is helping him see himself in the lineage.

Reading is not neutral. It never has been. It was illegal for our ancestors to read for a reason. He should know that.

Every book finished becomes part of a record. Not a school record — a family one. A generational one. Reading is how we hand down ourselves.

There will be voices telling him reading is not for him. The Bond is what holds him steady. The word he gives himself is the one that matters.

The endgame is not just that he can read. It is that he can speak back. Reading builds a mind that can make its own arguments. That is the freedom.
Bond is built.
III. The Thesis
For too long, schools have treated the way Black boys speak as something to be corrected before education can begin.
We reject that completely.
Black Language — what scholars from Geneva Smitherman to April Baker-Bell to H. Samy Alim have spent careers naming and defending — is a rule-governed, rhetorically rich, historically grounded linguistic tradition. It is not slang. It is not broken English. It is the language of poetry, oratory, theology, and political philosophy in the Black tradition.
Word Is Bond™ does not ask our boys to abandon their language to be taken seriously. We treat the language they already speak as the foundation of literacy — not the barrier to it.
The bond is in the word he already keeps.
Grounded in the work of Smitherman, Baker-Bell, Alim, Lee, Tatum, Muhammad, Ladson-Billings, Perry, Gee, and Freire.

V. Meet the Founder

I teach Government and AP Government. I am a doctoral candidate in Literacy Studies. I am a mama. And I built Word Is Bond™ because I got tired of watching brilliant Black boys get reduced to data points in rooms where nobody ever asked what they were actually thinking.
My work is grounded in the scholarly traditions of Alfred Tatum, Theresa Perry, Gholdy Muhammad, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Paulo Freire, and Geneva Smitherman. It refuses the deficit story. It treats literacy for what it has always been in the Black tradition — the original project of self-determination.
